WHAT & WHY

D A Y A W A Y
It’s time to take a Day Away. Do you need refreshment? Do you need the gift of a destination for soul restoration? This is your day to escape, re-aquaint with friends and self in a generous measure of connection time. Step out of the schedule and tugging demands, leave the city hustle, take a deep inhale and exhale as the luxury of time is extended to you one ripple of water at a time. Time to move at a slow pace, feel sun on your face. Time to notice the sounds, linger in conversation, come back to self. Time to taste every flavor of food carefully grown & tended from garden to plate , discover the nuances of color up close and appreciate the details. Create freely with no expectations or limitations.
Day Away is hosted on Bainbridge Island, at the charming 25-acre sustainable and historic Heyday Farm. We invite women to dis-connect, in order to re-connect. This will be a time of slow intention, soul restoration, observation of beauty, and appreciation of creativity. Our afternoon will include a farm tour, and interactive nature walks encouraging hand-selection of garden edibles for our meal. Find appreciation and expression of nature’s beautiful colors through watercolor with author & painter Lorene Edwards Forkner. Enjoy a plated farm-to-table meal set for long conversations and clinking of glasses. Relax in your silliness and friendships with photo booth fun. Show your support of local makers at a mini-marketplace all while cultivating relationships with each other and the collaborating partners who make this beauty possible. Our Day Away is captured and documented with professional photos, so you can focus on being present and savor the moments of your experience.

NATURE'S COLOR : INSPIRED WATERCOLOR
Color is one of nature’s most sophisticated tools designed to capture the attention of all living creatures. At this experience, we'll observe color and beauty found in gardens, along trails, from beaches, and outdoor places. During our 1 hour workshop, we’ll focus on honing perception and using color to translate beauty on the page. Using watercolors and working with found plants and other natural materials, participants will explore hidden hues and nuance. No previous experience is necessary—this isn’t botanical illustration so much as an exercise in mindfulness and seeing with fresh eyes.
Guests can expect informational teaching and time to play with palette and colors. Due to timing, some guests may
leave with a take-home project to continue color study
and finish art. Hello Miette photography surfaces will be provided to document your beautiful color expressions
using self shot flat-lay photos.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Tifanie Mitsui | Heyday Farm
Proprietor & Farm House Beverage Director
I’m an Islander for life. My family moved from Seattle to Bainbridge when I was 5.
When I was 14 a family friend offered me a summer job at their cheese company, which began my work in the food industry. Through island hopping and traveling around the world, I’ve developed a love for good food and wine. I keep coming back to food and service amid all of the other passions I’ve pursued. I’ve been a personal cook and housekeeper, personal assistant for a production company, bartender, food server, preschool teacher, nanny, to now being a mom of four and the Beverage Director at Heyday Farm. I love what I do here on the farm, in this picturesque setting. Heyday’s sense of farm to table hits home for me. I love simple, clean, local food, and love to share it with my children. It’s amazing to get out in the garden and see the whole circle, seed to plant to compost back to soil.
Lorene Edwards Forkner | A Handmade Garden
Like many of us with dirty nails and decidedly non-fashion-forward tan lines, my garden journey has been circuitous. In the mid 90s, my passionate love of plants led to owning and operating a small specialty nursery. There I discovered a community of like-minded souls for whom every flower, bulb, grass, and twig was a constant source of wonder and possibility. I also spent several years working in garden design helping others, like me, who needed to organize their growing collections into pleasing spaces.
These days, my work has more to do with tending gardeners—encouraging collaboration with natural systems and respect for the precious wildness all around us. More than just a seasonal pasttime, our gardens provide a creative outlet, personal respite, a connection with nature, and foster more livable communities
Nearly every week my stories appear in the GROW column in The Seattle Times where I explore the gardens and gardeners of the Pacific Northwest.
I am the author of several books, and am over the moon excited about my latest, Color In and Out of The Garden, coming in spring 2022 from Abrams.
Shari Stoddard | Heyday Farm
Farm House Event Manager
As a native Bainbridge Islander I have had the good fortune of enjoying the Island’s bounty as far back as I can remember.
As a young girl my best friend and I would get dropped off at the strawberry fields, pick and eat ripe berries all day, then go home and turn them into delicious strawberry shortcakes to sell right outside our front door. When I became a mother, my daughters would pick buckets of berries from our driveway to bake into our famous “driveway” pie, a favorite that is still requested when hosting friends and family. I’m so happy to be a part of a farm that has been restored to its former glory. I thoroughly enjoy the role of host and getting to share this special place and delicious food with our guests. See you on the farm…
